-Floyd County Public Animal Welfare Services-

Floyd County Public Animal Welfare Services has released more information regarding a health scare for the animals that has caused the facility to be closed for several days out of an abundance of caution.

On August 1st, during routine shelter checks, P.A.W.S. staff discovered a dog showing symptoms possibly indicative of distemper.

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious illness and even death in dogs.

The dog was promptly taken to the UGA Diagnostic Lab for testing.

Given the severity of distemper, after consultation with the Department of Agriculture, the decision was made to quarantine the shelter until we receive the test results.

While they are still awaiting these results, they are pleased to report that no other animals have shown any signs of illness.
