City of Rome closes offices and transit ahead of Hurricane Helene

September 26th, 2024 – 5:00 PM

WRGA Staff Reports –

Thursday afternoon the City of Rome issued the following statement:

“In response to the anticipated severe weather from Hurricane Helene, the City of Rome will close all Administrative Offices on Friday, September 27. Additionally, Rome Transit operations will be suspended for the day.

City officials are prioritizing public safety as the National Weather Service predicts wind gusts between 40 to 60 mph and heavy rainfall totaling four inches or more, beginning early Friday morning between 5 AM and 8 AM.

These conditions may result in falling trees, flash flooding of roadways, and widespread power outages.

Solid Waste crews will be on standby for potential debris removal; however, residents are advised that solid waste collection routes may be disrupted or delayed due to the storm.

To ensure safety and prevent additional hazards, we recommend that curbside cans remain secured until after the storm has passed.

The City of Rome encourages all residents to stay informed about changing weather conditions and to take necessary precautions during this time.

We urge everyone to follow safety guidelines and to avoid unnecessary travel as the storm approaches.”
