A Flood Watch is in effect as we prepare for a lot of rain from Helene as it moves through the state.
Heavy rainfall from Helene will likely lead to flooding concerns across north and central Georgia.
According to Chris Fincher with Floyd County Emergency Management, the potential for flash flooding is his main concern.
“The ground is already dry so you can imagine as that rain is hitting the ground it’s just going to wash away and pool in places,” he said.
Remember….Never drive through flooded areas on roads and do not drive around high water signs. They are there for a reason.
““Running water poses a significant hazard if you’re walking and even if you’re driving,” Fincher said. “You can be washed away pretty easily, and the water can cover so much that you cannot see beneath. Be so mindful of that.”
Helene is also expected to bring high winds.
“My concern is with all the rain, and then the winds come in, it’s going to have a tendency to push down our trees,” Fincher added. “Folks need to be prepared. If the lights go out, you may be without power for an extended period of time. Georgia Power has improved their infrastructure locally, so their times are a bit faster, but during storms, it is hard to predict. You don’t ever know until it actually happens, so folks prepare now to be without power.”
