The Floyd County Board of Education approved the final reading for the fiscal year 2025 budget during a called meeting Monday, including a decrease in the tax rate.
The budget received unanimous approval from the board. Floyd County Schools Superintendent Glenn White stated that the millage rate of 17.136 is the district’s preliminary millage rate. This is the proposed tax rate for the school district and does not include the tax rate for the Floyd County government.
This new millage rate would reduce the district’s tax rate from 17.70 mills.
White explained the reduced tax rate as reaching what he termed as the rollback rate. Essentially, that term means that the millage rate is reduced to ensure people pay the same amount as they did last year.
“I have looked through the records and there has never been a rollback for as far as we go back in the records, for 25 years,” White said.
Deputy Superintendent Jamey Alcorn stated that the district has been committed to reducing taxes.
“What we can say is Floyd County Schools has continued to reduce the tax each year for seven of the last nine years,” Alcorn said.
The local taxing authorities in Floyd County include the county itself, the city of Rome, the Floyd County Board of Education and, to one degree or another, Rome Board of Education.
Those entities will decide the tax rate — officially known as the millage rate. The tax bill you receive is the assessed value of your property multiplied by the millage rate.
The county’s chief appraiser, Danny Womack, will have the final millage rate within the next two weeks. The board of education will approve the final rate on July 1, which is the start of the 2025 fiscal year.
