Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office –
According to Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver, deputies, and an Alabama State Trooper were involved in a pursuit in the Waterloo community on Tuesday afternoon.
The driver of the vehicle fled from law enforcement on multiple roads in the Broomtown and Waterloo communities before coming to a stop on County Road 89.
Law enforcement initiated the stop because the driver was wanted on several felony warrants in Cherokee and DeKalb Counties.
The suspect was armed with a firearm and refused to exit the vehicle. After a brief standoff, the suspect fired the weapon and sustained a gunshot wound. Assistance was provided at the scene by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team.
Atrium EMS responded to the scene and treated the individual, but he died at the scene as a result of the self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to Chief Deputy Josh Summerford, the JSU Center for Applied Forensics Critical Incident Response Team was called to the scene and is conducting an investigation as part of normal protocol.
The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office is also conducting an investigation.
