STAFF REPORTS
The Floyd County Board of Education has backed a proposal to put speed enforcement cameras in the Armuchee Elementary School zone on Highway 27 North.
Law enforcement first presented the plan to the county’s public safety committee in December with the school board giving their support on Monday.
Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department explained why this particular school zone was chosen.
“With Glenwood closing, we are going to be adding about another 100 students at Armuchee Elementary School,” he said. “Also, we know, just from our own enforcement actions and research that the 27 North/State Route 1 corridor is pretty busy for us as far as speed enforcement goes, and crashes. It is the number 2 state route in the county for the number of crashes that we have.”
Like the speed enforcement cameras that the city has in the Rome High School Zone on Veterans Memorial Highway, those going 11 miles per hour above the posted speed limit during school hours would be ticketed.
“I think it would also benefit the Armuchee High school zone which is just south of this location, and getting people to slow down,” Hunton added. “Any fines that are generated from this, we will just be trying to cover the cost of technology. As we look into the future, technology is going to be a bigger cost.”
The plan will also be brought before the Floyd County Commission for approval.
Enforcement would begin 60 days after the contract is signed and there would be a 30 day warning period.
