A man died in a house fire Tuesday morning at the corner of Rock Fence Road and Barnsley Gardens Road in Bartow County.

911 began receiving calls about the fire just after 7:30 a.m. and, according to Bartow County Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Dwayne Jamison, the structure was about 75 involved when the first units arrived on the scene.

Jamison said there were three people in the home when the fire started, but only two were able to make it out.

One of the men woke up, tried to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher and alerted the other occupants.

“He and the female tried to assist the invalid individual who was there by helping him into a chair and trying to get him out, but they were overcome by smoke and high heat, so they had to exit the home, “Jamison said.

There was also a delay in notifying 911 of the fire because no one in the home had a phone.

They had to go about 100 yards down the road to call 911.

The body of the man who died has been sent to the GBI Crime Lab for positive identification.

Trion Police Chief David Gilleland told WZQZ News that the death is still under investigation, but for now, the incident is being treated as a fatal four-wheeler accident.
Several area roads still have standing water on them and some remain closed.
Due to potential flooding that could create unsafe road conditions tomorrow morning, Floyd County Schools will be on a 2-hour delay for all staff and students.
