Floyd Schools experiencing enrollment decline

HOMETOWN HEADLINES

As school system officials get ready for the closing of McHenry Primary School at the end of the current school year, the possibility of consolidating other schools in Floyd County is being discussed.

Floyd County School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson told Hometown Headline that no plans on the table and no decisions have been made.

However, he added that conversations are starting about tough future decisions facing the school board and leaders.

Wilson says the system has consistently been losing between 150-200 students each year.

As of Wednesday, there were 144 fewer students enrolled than in 2017-2018 school year.

Over the next five years, that will be a decline of approximately 1000 students.

Fewer students means less funding from the state and that could be really expensive for local taxpayers to keep all 19 schools, according to Wilson.

Join us for Monday’s edition of the Hometown Headlines Radio at 8:10 a.m. with Wilson and School Board Chair Chip Hood, who will be talking about potential changes in the county school system.
